There are many free online file uploading (or file hosting sites…whatever) out there. Some are well known and others (sometimes better ones) aren’t. If you don’t know what a file uploading service is, it’s pretty simple. They usually let you upload files of any type, have a size limit, and give you a link to the uploaded file. It comes in handy for when i need to move files big or small from one computer to another without bothering with cards and whatnot. I use them all the time if there’s a file i want to share with friends easily. All the free services delete your file after a week or a month or longer sometimes but it gets the job done fine. Anyway, back on track…I hate Rapidshare . It has a download limit. What’s the point when you need to store files and move more than one or two files in an hour? Why the hell are they so popular? Just off the top of my head, Sendspace , Mediafire, and Sharebee are much better and freebie friendly. So Let’s go through them. I want to make it my civic duty so that no one has to wait to download, has a download limit (without being real low or at least providing great service otherwise), or pay a dime for file hosting again. Enjoy.
This post is also known as "why the hell does everyone use rapidshare ?"
Here is a list of the best free file hosting sites. A file hosting comparison chart is below.
- SendSpace .com : SendSpace is what I use for quick single uploads that i don’t need online for long. It’s max upload file size is 300 megabytes (mb ) so for anything under that it’s great. You can you an on-site multiple uploader to upload 5 files at a time. Your file gets deleted after 30 days of inactivity.
- ShareBee .com : ShareBee is a little different because it isn’t an actually file hosting site. They claim to be the world’s first file distribution service. This means that once you upload your file ShareBee basically re-uploads it to other major file hosting sites including RapidShare , Megaupload , Badongo , and zShare and gives you a URL to download from each service. The upload file size is only 100mb but it’s good if you want your file to have redundant backups. Just in case one service drops your file, you have 3 more to work with.
- MassMirror .com : MassMirror is another file distribution service except it handles files up to 1000mb (1 gigabyte) in size, which is the biggest of all file distributors. It also automatically splits your uploaded file in zip format if the file is too big for the other sites, which include zShare , Megaupload , Rapidshare , and Badongo . Amazing feature and not too well known.
- zShare .net : zShare has maximum file limit of 500mb which is decent and holds your files for 60 days of inactivity. A big plus about zShare is that one can download as many files as they want at the same time. A characteristc file hosting services rarely offer.
- Megaupload .com : The best feature of Megaupload is that your file stays alive until 90 days of inactivity. So you know your file will be available for at least 3 months. It has a 1 gigabyte (gb ) maximum file size as well.
- Bodongo .com : I like Bodongo because you don’t have to wait for files to download except there is an hourly limit of downloads. It’s not sure how long they hold your files but you can upload a file as big as 1gb .
- FileFactory .com : File factory has a maximum upload size of 300mb but lets you upload as much as 25 files at once. That’s 7.5gb ! Good for uploading big files split up by less than 300mb . They also only delete your files after 90 days of inactivity.
- MediaFire .com : MediaFire does something that no other file uploaders do. They let you upload an unlimited amount of files at once. The max file size for uploads is only 100 megs, but if you have a lot of under 100mb files, you can store them all on one site and click upload once instead of uploading, waiting, uploading, waiting, and so forth. Mediafire deletes your files after 30 days of inactivity.
- TranferBigFiles .com : TransferBigFiles isn’t the best but it tries. It let’s you upload 5 files at once. With a maximum file upload size of 1gb , that’s a total of 5gb .
- FileDucky .com : FileDucky is a good, simple site that uploads to Rapidshare , Badongo , Sendspace , and zShare . FileDucky only let’s you upload 100mb at a time but that’s common for file distributors.
- MegaShares .com : MegaShares is kinda tricky. They say the max file size for uploads is 10gb , but that’s for folks with an account. The actual size is 1.5gb for a single upload or 1gb for the multiple file uploader which supports ten files. So with the multiple file uploader , one can upload up to 10gb in ten 1gb files or just upload a single 1.5gb file on the front page.
- UploadJockey .com : This one’s another file distributor. UploadJockey is used by a lot of folks and uploads your files to FileFactory , Easy-Share, and Mediafire (more if you register an account with them). Like usual for distributors, the max file size for uploads is 100mb .
- Hosted.org : While their site is void of the download limit or how long it stores your files, they have a 10gb max file size! That’s the biggest file size for uploads in the bunch.
- WikiUpload .com : Like Hosted.org Wikiupload doesn’t have much information and some stuff on the site doesn’t show, but it has a 5gb file size maximum. A big one. I don’t think they have any corellation to Wikipedia . They might’ve just wanted to cash in on the name. who knows.
All stats below are based off of the non-membership uploads. Some of these sites have free accounts that give you more options and some have paid options as well. But they are only on this list because they’re that damn good without an account.

| WikiUpload | 5000 | unknown | unknown | no | yes |
* means that the row represents a file uploader that distributes your file to other major file hosting sites when complete. That means that the download limitations and file life are dependent upon the final host.
If you know of any good/better file hosting sites, please let me know. Which one’s do you use? Are you an uploader or downloader or both?

I prefer Filefactory.com because it uploads files reasonably faster. May I also add Ziddu.com on this list.

That is a large list of free file sharing sites. We will have to check them out since we are in need of a new host to upload some pretty large files.

the reason why rapidshare is so popular, i think it’s because rapidshare was one of the first file hosts if not the first, and also uploaders wish to earn points from rapidshare for their account.
